Skerry Marine Systems was founded in Southampton in 2017 by naval architect Elin Marchetti and control engineer Tomas Aldridge, on the premise that the economics of offshore survey and inspection would be rewritten by vessels that did not need to carry people.
The company builds two platforms. The K3 Scout is a 12-metre autonomous surface vessel designed for extended survey and patrol endurance, capable of 30 days at sea without intervention. The K4 Manta is a mid-water autonomous underwater vehicle rated to 3,000 metres, launched and recovered from the K3 or from a host vessel.
Both are operated through Helm, Skerry's autonomy and fleet operations software, which handles mission planning, collision avoidance under COLREGs, over-the-horizon supervision and data return. Helm is also licensed to operators running third-party hulls.
Skerry employs 210 people. Vessel assembly and integration take place at the company's Southampton waterfront facility; subsea payload work and North Sea operations are run from Aberdeen. The company has raised £96m to date and holds Lloyd's Register type approval for uncrewed surface operations in UK and Norwegian waters.
