Boston Dynamics Unveils New Four-Fingered Hand for Atlas Humanoid Robot

By ASR Newsdesk ·

Boston Dynamics has introduced a new hand for its Atlas humanoid robot, featuring four fingers and 13 degrees of freedom. This directly actuated hand is designed for mass manufacturing and focuses on object manipulation rather than a wide variety of grasps. The design omits a pinky finger to reduce complexity and improve efficiency. The hand incorporates transparent direct actuation and dense pressure tactile sensors, enabling high-fidelity simulation for reinforcement learning and sim-to-real transfer. It is capable of various grasps, including pinch and trigger grips, and is similar in size to a large human hand.

Why it matters

The new hand is designed for high-fidelity simulation to enable sim-to-real reinforcement learning.
